This unlisted YouTube video bears witness to a beautiful moment during the bleakness of the pandemic, during which Carolyn Watson and members of the University of Kansas orchestra premiered the ensemble version of my piece Snow Angel, a chamber opera with text by Kansas Poet Laureate Emerita Wyatt Townley. While the subject matter is dark, dealing with the journey through and beyond sexual assault, Townley’s brilliant, spare poetry (from her book Rewriting the Body) powerfully narrates the protagonist’s non-linear path towards reclaiming her identity and agency.
